Bringing Art and Culture to Life Through Film

Amid the vibrant streets of 1950s Bangkok, a young boy releases his handmade kite into the clear blue sky—a simple moment that sparked Jacqueline Ayer's imagination and led her to create children's books that would inspire generations.

At Shootlab, we had the honor of producing a museum documentary for the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, dedicated to exploring the remarkable journey of Jacqueline Ayer. Our film immerses viewers in Ayer's world, blending her vivid illustrations and personal stories to show how her artistry left an indelible mark on both children's literature and the fashion industry.

From New York to Thailand: A Journey of Creativity

Born in New York City, Jacqueline Ayer's artistic spirit was evident from a young age. But it was her move to Thailand in the 1950's that truly ignited her creative soul. Immersed in the rich tapestry of Thai culture, she began sketching everyday moments—the flutter of silk in the marketplace, the laughter of children, the serene beauty of the temple gardens.

These experiences fed into beautifully illustrated children's books like Nu Dang and His Kite and A Paper Flower Tree. Our art documentary captures how Thailand's colours and stories transformed her storytelling, infusing her work with vibrancy and authenticity.

To explore Jacqueline Ayer's life and work, we interviewed her daughter, Bet Ayer, at her home in Sussex, weaving together Bet's memories with intimate archival footage. "My mother saw beauty in the everyday," Bet reflects. "She believed even the simplest moments deserved to be shared with the world." Through this docuseries-style interview, Bet shares heartfelt stories of her mother’s creative process, adventures in Thailand, and experiences in 1960s London. Her reflections add a deeply personal layer to the mini-documentary, inviting viewers to connect with Jacqueline not just as an artist but as a mother and cultural pioneer.

Jacqueline Ayer was not merely an illustrator; she was a visionary trailblazer in the fashion industry. Supported by American entrepreneur Jim Thompson, she founded Design Thai, a fashion company instrumental in revitalizing the Thai silk industry. By blending traditional Thai patterns with contemporary aesthetics, Ayer's creations introduced the allure of Thai textiles to the global fashion scene. Our documentary features archival photos, fabrics, and some of her original clothing, showcasing her innovative designs and underscoring how her work continues to influence fashion today.
